Justin Miller – the man knows what is good. He is keen on the exciting world of #redhookcrit and consistently invites friends to join him year after year.

I finally joined him this year, glad to take a break from my own foray in bike racing and use my energy to cheer and document the race rather than ride. We watched a few hundred stylish and elite fixed gear cyclists into the night, as they raced a winding, closed-circuit course just over a kilometer long, featuring tight chicanes, sweeping turns and high-speed straightaways.

The Red Hook Crit is to fixed-gear criteriums what the Tour De France is to stage racing. There was so much to see, and many awesome people to meet.

Colleen Gulick was the women’s field champ. I had met her just a week earlier, via my own coach BJ Olson. They had participated and won first place at a Gold Sprints competition. It was a thrill to have a familiar person to cheer for. I also met and chatted with Gibby Hatton, a legendary American track cyclist who was the first American to race the Keirin in Japan. He is now a coach and we connected over talent and the future of cycling. Looking back, it’s elating how my foray into cycling this year has made connected me to great passionate people like BJ, Colleen, and Gibby.

Justin himself spotted the president of Cinelli. I nudged Justin to say hi to Adam. So he did take a few seconds of his time, and they took a great photo together.

Needless to say #rhcbk10 it was a blast.

Heres a portrait of @justallmill as a thank you for sharing his interests and plugging me into a newfound delight. (at Red Hook Criterium Brooklyn)

"The Bakehouse Art Complex was purchased for $225,000 in 1985 after members of a Coconut Grove artist collective lost their studios to a parking lot. Doors opened to the 33,000-square-foot facility, formerly home to the American Bakeries Company, on Feb. 1, 1987."
